“Blessed Assurance” by Third Day.

Why O’ why have the great hymns of old disappeared and will SOMEBODY please bring them back!

I’ve been on the hunt for contemporary artists singing the classic hymns of the faith and have discovered quite a few gems. Everyone is getting hip to how theoligically rich and deep they are…like scripture set to music practically. Mm Mm good.

My favorite “band” has been Third Day since the Lord saved me years ago and when I found Mac singing “Blessed Assurance”, I just about fell over. It’s a cryin’ shame the audio is so wretched.

The old hymns are just beautiful. I once heard someone mention that if you can sing your praise and worship music to your girl/boyfriend, then it’s not lofty enough.

You can’t tell me that song doesn’t lift your soul!

Here are the lyrics.

I am SO with you on that! Contemporary Christian music is wonderful, but like you, I am always listening, searching, reading the lyrics. I want to hear the words of God lifted up in song, a new song every day, just as the Psalms say! My reason for this desire to hear Scripture in songs that are in the new style (not necessarily a slow beat like hymns) is from these verses: Deuteronomy 11:18-20 “Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 19 Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 20 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates…”

So I listen to them when I feel like listening to music in the car, as my husband’s alarm songs, as music we drift off to. 🙂 I can send you all the artists/lyrics I have found – let me know if you’re interested!
